In the last 19th century, a bacteria known as botulinum toxin was found in aging meats, causing an illness known as botulism that caused widespread death to all that consumed it. Despite its origination from the most toxin substance in the world, BOTOX® injections are actually quite safe. Though BOTOX® cosmetic is required to state the dangers that may occur if the toxin spreads somewhere other than the face, it is believed that cosmetic procedures performed by a trained professional are completely safe--but only when used for cosmetic surgery.

There are some side effects, including redness, numbness, and in rare instances nausea and headache, but these often go away within a matter of a few days.
